$50 Million dollar Air Traffic Control Tower Project Awarded to DeAngelis Diamond

$50 Million dollar Air Traffic Control Tower Project Awarded to DeAngelis Diamond

  • Friday, May 8, 2015 9:57 AM

DeAngelis Diamond Construction has been selected as the construction manager/general contractor for the new Southwest Florida International Airport Air Traffic Control Tower and Tracon Building. The project will replace the 31-year old structure that is currently in the wrong location to serve the airport.

The new tower, expected to cost approximately $50 Million (total), is a prerequisite to adding a second runway and the new terminal expansion which has already been master planned. At 215 feet, the new tower will be almost twice the height of the one it will replace and at 17,000 square feet (Tracon Building and Tower), will double the size of the existing tower and Tracon facility, which was built before the airport opened in 1983. The new tower also will bring the airport up to speed on the latest FAA standards for towers as well as building and hurricane codes.

For DeAngelis Diamond, this will mean nearly a 4-year involvement at the airport and should start in 4-6 months. AECOM is the Program Manager for this project. POND is the national architect, SchenkelShultz is the local architect and J. Kokolakis Contracting is the tower subconsultant. Pictured below is the DeAngelis Diamond and J.Kokolakis team that presented on the project.

Jason Sain, Vice President/Principal of DeAngelis Diamond Healthcare Group (DDHG), Eric Brackin, Project Manager of DDHG and David Brown, Principal of JJCA Architecture, traveled to Auburn University, to teach the Building Science Department, about Lean Construction.

Lean is a practice that continues to grow interest for healthcare industry owners and users. The principle is based on continuous improvement through innovation, planning work for the next trade, craft, or designer, and respect for others working on the project. Lean promotes a culture for collaboration and fosters lasting relationships. With this process, there are less punch-list items and less warranty calls, an important factor when completing a project. Lean delivery method is becoming a standard in the construction and design industry for new graduates.

DeAngelis Diamond Healthcare Group enjoys partnering with universities and colleges, both for educating and future employment opportunities. DeAngelis Diamond recently hired interns from Auburn University, University of Florida, University of North Florida and Florida Gulf Coast University. In May, students will start their jobs at construction sites located all over the country. DDHG recognizes that our future is in the hands of the upcoming graduates.
